Figurative Paintings
Ruth didn’t go back to what was familiar. She stepped out in faith and walked into the unknown. Her courage brought her to her divine destiny. Don’t look back. – A Modern Day Ruth
My first mature body of work was figurative and used imagery of women and their triumph over difficulty to address my own experience. I felt comfortable presenting my hardships by painting what I felt was the universal experience. The imagery often referenced both Old and New Testament stories that involved women gaining wellness through spirituality. I was inspired by the fact that women throughout time have faced many of the same issues and challenges that I have faced – and have overcome them in the same way.
The most important in the first series was based on the story of Ruth from the Old Testament. Ruth became a visual metaphor for me and other women. Even though I continued to explore beyond this figurative work, the female form is something that I have not abandoned. The power that comes through the figure and the stories it tells is critical to my work.
